Knowing the Facts About Fluoride in Your Well Water

Are you getting the right facts about fluoride in your well water? Fluoride is more than an ingredient in your toothpaste, and if your well water contains too much or too little, you may not be receiving the full dental benefits. Mosman Well Works can help you understand what fluoride is, and why your well water should have just the right amount.

What Is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in the earth. You likely come into contact with fluoride daily, as it is present in beverages, drinking water, and a variety of dental products. Fluoride reduces the chance of dental cavities by strengthening enamel and can decrease pain caused by tooth decay. According to the CDC, Americans get 75% of their fluoride from consuming packaged beverages and drinking water. While there is no daily requirement for fluoride, drinking water should contain at least 0.7 mg/L of fluoride to improve dental health.

Why Does Drinking Water Contain Fluoride?

Most water naturally has some fluoride content, but it must meet strict guidelines to be considered potable in everyday circumstances. In communities with municipal water, the EPA regulates the amount of fluoride in the water from the tap. Drinking water that meets EPA standards must have a fluoride content between 0.7 mg/L and 2.0 mg/L. If you have a private well, having your water tested is the best way to ensure your family is enjoying the benefits of fluoride. Under CDC recommendations, drinking water that contains more than 4.0 mg/L should be filtered before it is consumed or used for cooking.
