Why Coliform Well Water Testing Is Important

Ruan Marinho • Sep 15, 2021

Access to clean water is a necessity for all. If you own a well, testing and maintenance is important to ensure safe water for you and your family. But what do you do if you discover bacteria? Coliform bacteria are some of the most common types found in well water and can pose serious health risks if not contained.

What Is Coliform Bacteria?

In addition to ground water, plants and soil, coliform bacteria are found in the intestines of warm-blooded animals, including humans. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a particular type of coliform that results from water contaminated with fecal matter. Drinking water contaminated with coliform can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even life-threatening symptoms.

Treatments for Coliform Bacteria

The following methods are used to remove coliform bacteria from well water:

Shock Chlorination. This is the process of introducing highly-concentrated chlorine in coliform bacteria-infested well water for a brief period. Research has shown that shock chlorination and installation of a sanitary well cap reduces the chances of re-infestation of coliform bacteria.

Continuous Disinfection. An alternative if shock chlorination doesn’t work, you are required to get a disinfectant treatment system for effective results in continuous disinfection.

System Maintenance. As a precautionary measure against coliform bacteria, some system maintenance techniques include tightening the top casing in the well, regular monitoring of the septic system, and sealing the spring box.

When to Hire a Professional

It is recommended that bacteria in your well water be tested and treated by a professional. Two main circumstances include:

If the Infestation Is Recurring. If the infestation of coliform bacteria recurs after treatment, a professional will carry out subsequent tests and give the best solution to the problem.

If the Pumping System Is Complicated. The pumping system’s complexity in the water well determines the ease of treatment. If your pumping system is complex, you will need the services of a professional.
