When Do You Need to Replace Your Well Water Pump?

Unlike a municipal water supply, a private well is a DIY affair. And if you’ve recently purchased a property with a private well, you need to be prepared to perform regular maintenance and repairs. The quality and quantity of your water depend on you keeping your well in good working order.

Barring unforeseen damage, a properly sized and installed well pump should last between eight and ten years before it needs to be replaced. However, new homeowners often don’t have complete information about the condition of their pump upon buying their home. As a result, their well may be in disrepair or close to it.

If you’ve experienced any of the following, there’s a good chance you need your well pump replaced.

Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure may indicate pump damage or that it isn’t the right size or fit for your well. However, you may also experience low water pressure if your well is running dry, or your pressure tank has a leak.

Air in Your Pipes

The emission of air from your shower head or faucet might indicate that your pump has been placed above the water in your well. If this is the case, your pump will have to be moved. Air emissions can also result from cracked or broken pipes, which you’ll need to have repaired or replaced.

Lack of Water

If you’re not getting any water at all from your well, you may have problems with your pump itself or the electrical system which powers your pump. You can try to reset your pump’s circuit breaker, but you need to call a specialist to diagnose the problem if that doesn’t work.

Inability to Turn Your Pump Off

Your pump allows you to regulate the flow of water to your home. But just as an inability to pump water is a sure sign your pump needs repair or replacement, the opposite is also true. A pump that never shuts off needs corrective action just like a pump that produces no water. If your water is constantly running, the wear and tear on your system will increase, which increases the risk of catastrophic damage to your pump and pipes.
