Where Does Well Water Come From?

As a homeowner with a well, you may have wondered where the water that comes out of your tap actually comes from. At Mosman Well Works, LLC, we're excited to share with you the fascinating story of where well water comes from.

The Water Table

Well water comes from the water table, which is the layer of permeable rock or soil that is saturated with water. The water table is recharged by precipitation, surface water, and groundwater flow. In areas with high precipitation, the water table can be very deep, while in areas with low precipitation, the water table can be very shallow.

Groundwater Flow

Groundwater flows through the aquifer, which is the layer of rock or soil that contains the water table. The aquifer is made up of porous rock or soil that allows water to flow through it. The aquifer is recharged by precipitation and surface water that seeps into the ground.

The Well Construction Process

When a well is constructed, a hole is drilled or dug to access the water table. The well casing is then placed in the hole to line the well and prevent collapse. The screen is attached to the casing to allow water to flow into the well. The pump is then installed to bring the water to the surface.

Types of Wells

There are several types of wells, including:

  • Dug wells: These are shallow wells that are dug by hand or with machinery.
  • Drilled wells: These are deeper wells that are drilled using a drilling rig.
  • Bored wells: These are wells that are drilled using a rotary drilling rig.
